Week 12 – Check, check, and check.

January 8, 2013

TOTAL HOURS LOGGED: 2612

Progress was made. Finished learning all songs for this week plus lyrics that go with them. Simply at this point it’s a matter of recording them, most likely I will attempt to get a recording of all material that is due sometime this weekend coming up as it is the only time I have off this week from working a normal job, and when no one is around in my block so I can crank the amp. I’ve come up with some nice power chord melodies, the classics, you know. Will try to put some lyrics to them soon.

Some goals for next week:

– Watch 5 guitar tutorials.

– Learn the following songs: Basket Case green day, and Betterman Pearl jam.

– Write songs.

That’s it for this week, looking forward to seeing you all next week,

Sincerely,

Ali MacLennan

P.S. Keith Richards is starting to infulence me a lot after reading his biography. Loved it and would suggest it to all music fans.

Week 11 – Welcome to 2013.

January 1, 2013

TOTAL HOURS LOGGED: 2602

Howdy folks, so I got some playing in this week and some recording. Check off The Man who Sold the World, and the White Stripes I don’t know what to do with myself. I decided to learn a tune that caught my eye because he’s coming down to Montreal at the end of January, Marilyn Manson’s The Beautiful People. I’ve already got it down, just need to record it.

Here’s some video footage of the man who sold the world:

(yes I am in my underwear) …. I’m not really happy with my camera or tone in this video, I do blame the equipment. Thankfully with 2013 rolling around I plan to acquire some new equipment to make this a lot better.

Anyway right down to the goals of next week:

– Continue to learn the notes on the guitar neck.

– Write songs.

– Learn the following material: Molly’s Chamber by Kings of Leon, and Cold Cold Night by the White Stripes.

That’s it for this week, looking forward to seeing you all next week,

Sincerely,

Ali MacLennan

Week 10 – Christmas Updates

December 25, 2012

TOTAL HOURS LOGGED: 2595

So sorry for the lack of updates guys, I got sick with the Christmas flu, and didn’t really get a lot of playing done this month. I did a bit and recorded some things but never got a chance to post an update on that.

I got a chance to do some recording, here’s my version of After Hours:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUOj8OaQ6MA&list=UUeL6XwcNbDO8SdkcW6iuMBw

Basically just know I am still alive and will be advancing this blog as it was before with weekly updates. Consider the goals the same. Thanks for reading, and happy holidays everyone.

Sincerely,

Ali MacLennan

Week 9 – Mega updates, not a lot of actual work done though.

November 29, 2012

TOTAL HOURS LOGGED: 2585
So I didn’t actually do a lot of work this week, but I managed to get a lot done. So I learned After Hours and I just don’t know what to do with myself, and wrote some mega lyrics. On top of that I met someone who has taught me quite a bit about the record producing process and how that works. I still need to learn more about the printing process itself and I plan on making some calls this week to answer the questions I have regarding that. I didn’t get much time to record takes, but I’ll try my best to get that up this sometime this week. I’ve also decided to make an album, and set a deadline for myself. March 23rd, I want to release it. Furthermore I plan on doing some work on this site next week and spicing things up a bit, after all I’m pouring quite a lot of energy into this so I should make it my own. 🙂

So let’s get down to it for next week, here’s some goals I’ve set out:

– Be able to play the following material: With or Without you, The Man who Sold the World, Swing Guitar lessons.

– Learn more about the printing process/recording process in general.

– Write songs.

– Brainstorm album art ideas for upcoming release.

That’s it for this week, looking forward to seeing you all next week,

Sincerely,

Ali MacLennan

P.S. I did type and post this reply last night, but my Internet decided to crash, and I was too lazy to rewrite it all out that night. But I am on time with my updates accordingly.

Week 8 – Memory work. Doing the motions.

November 22, 2012

TOTAL HOURS LOGGED: 2580

So I’m on time with my update, that is something new, and that I would promise myself I would do. (Even though I have other things to do.) So this week was essentially a memory week, going over the motions again and again. The With or Without you fingerstyle verison I want to sing with as well, so that’s adding to the difficulty—I have completely learned I don’t know what to do with myself (will post a video up soon), I learned all about how vinyl records are made, but I still need to research more the recording process itself. I’m planning to call some studios and recording companies to actually figure out this process more. I started as well to brainstorm album artwork ideas that I have for something I’m working on in my head. Of course this is all still just an imagintive blueprint but you need to start somewhere right. Anyway, as far as songwriting goes, I came up with a really nice melody that I can write too… which is mostly thanks to the Drop D tuning of With or Without you. As well I’ve scrapped learning Everlong by the Foo Fighers, the rhythm of the song is simply to frustrating to captive me and I can’t get it to sound good to my ear. I wish I was Dave Grohl HA.

So here’s the goals for week 9:

– Be able to play the following material: With or Without you, After Hours by the Velvet Underground.

– Learn the notes on the low E string.

– Learn one new technique on the guitar.

– Learn more about the recording process and recording techniques.

– Write lyrics and finish the melody I have.

– Post and record the work I have done here.

See you all in a week or so,

Ali MacLennan

Week 6/7 – Thinking about turning the titles to just “updates”.

November 14, 2012

TOTAL HOURS LOGGED: 2570

So I’m thinking about changing the titles from weeks to updates as with life getting in the way, it’s difficult to post each and every week. I will give myself one more chance at this and if it doesn’t work, I will change it to “updates”. Some changes that happened with me though; I’m focusing more on writing at the moment and actually going out and playing live—that in itself is an act that must be mastered. So I’m taking up planned gigging. I will go on weekends and gig at bars if the situation presents itself. I’ve also scrapped all my previous goals, turns out those songs weren’t clicking with me and I just didn’t feel them.

Here’s some new goals for week 8:

– Be able to play the following material: I just don’t know what to do with myself, With or Without you (fingerstyle arrangement), Everlong.

– Learn the notes on the low E string.

– Learn one new technique on the guitar.

– Learn more about the recording process and recording techniques.

– Write and record one song for showcasing here.

Thanks, see you next week (hold me to it?). 😉

Sincerely,

Ali MacLennan

Week 5 – Daily deadlines are broken. :-/

October 28, 2012

TOTAL HOURS LOGGED: 2555

The usual. You know… Deadlines, let’s leave it at that. I’ve just been going through motions, with little passion, I think I’m having a loss of motivation with music right now and I’m wanting to do a lot more writing. Not even musical writing, just writing in general. So that’s what I did, but I still got some playing done. I completed my goals, I now know the Crazy Train solo, pieces of the Help the Poor solo (I couldn’t be bothered to learn the whole thing), Feeling This, and I’ve learned the lyrics to Francis by Coeur De Pirate (I’m not french so that’s why ;)). I do have part of a song written, it’s not done—but I will finish it for sure, it’s not something I’m going to be putting on the backburner. Anyway, here’s some video footage…

Wasn’t really satisfied with my vocals on a lot of the recordings I did, but I just want to get them out of the way and move on to new stuff. I’m learning to sing at the same time… so, yeah.

But now down to the new goals.

Goals of Week 6:

– Be able to play the following material: Take me Away (oasis), Help! (the beatles), Strawberry Fields Forever (the beatles), and We’re Going to be Friends (jack white).

– Learn the notes on the low E string.

– Learn one new technique on the guitar.

– Learn more about the recording process and recording techniques.

– Write and record one song for showcasing here.

Week 4 – Where’s all the Videos?

October 16, 2012

TOTAL HOURS LOGGED: 2545

It appears sorry seems to be a reoccuring theme with my updates. Again, I’m sorry for missing the week deadline, it makes me feel like I’m not at that “professional” level yet, which I know I’m not even close to yet. So, right to business like a professional. Everything from last week is still in the works. Yep, I said it, I basically went through motions over and over again, which needs to be done. So the goals will remain the same from last week. But I do have a video update, I got a chance to record Peter Green’s need your love so bad solo, and viola.

See you all next week with a new update.

Sincerely,

Ali MacLennan

Week 3 Update – Do work.

October 10, 2012

TOTAL HOURS LOGGED: 2535

Sorry guys for the late update, I did learn a lot but I didn’t get a chance to record much video footage and therefore don’t really have much to show per se. My full-time job has also been getting in the way, I highly dislike working in the normal world which is why I’ve started some entrepreneurial tasks to hopefully rid myself of the 9-5 world and allow me to work for myself. Anyway, down to the business of this site.

So with respect to last weeks personal goal lists, I failed, and I failed bad. STILL working on the Crazy Train solo, and Help the Poor is filled with ridiculously difficult licks that I’m still learning. The solo to Need Your Love so Bad is done, and I will post up a video log of that ASAP. Still learning the lyrics to Francis by Coeur De Pirate, but the melody is mastered — just so everyone knows it’s a French song, which is why it’s take such a long time. I didn’t write any music, I was actually suppose to jam with a friend, but that fell through. Regardless of all this, I must push forward and add new goals to this weeks list or I wouldn’t be progressing…

Goals of Week 4:
– Be able to play the following material: Crazy Train Solo, Help the Poor Robbin Ford Solo, Francis by Coeur De Pirate, Feeling This (Blink 182),

– Have 1 song written (no matter what!)

– Know every note on the high e and b strings.

– Learn one new interesting technique on the guitar

– Listen to a lot of new music and try to synthesize it down into something I can use with my playing.

See you all next week with a new update.

Sincerely,

Ali MacLennan

Week 2 Update

October 1, 2012

TOTAL HOURS LOGGED: 2524.15

So… Here’s the latest update! I did a bit more playing this week then the previous week. I got some stuff recorded, that I’ve attached below for progress updates. I’m still having difficulty with the Crazy Train solo (the fact that I’m playing it through a fender and a crappy amp is no doubt making that worse)–regardless I will struggle on and attempt to master it. ALso I have forgotton about Jimi Hendrix’s fire, right now my Stratocaster is having some tension problems with the A string near the 12th fret, so I’ve tossed that song until I get this fixed. Anyway, so I’ve learned Peter Green’s Need Your Love So Bad… but I also want to learn the lyrical parts more so I will continue to study this piece. I did write a new song, which I’m really proud of. 🙂 I’ll post that up soon as well; and I did learn some new licks and more notes on the guitar.

Here’s some video footage updates!

Seize the day solo:

Unwind the Chainsaw theme:

So down to business for week 3 goals…

Goals of Week 3:
– Be able to play the following material: Crazy Train Solo, Help the Poor Robbin Ford Solo, Need Your Love so Bad by Peter Green (singing it as well, not JUST the solo), Francis by Coeur De Pirate.

– Have 1 song written

– Know every note on the high e and b strings.

– Learn one new interesting technique on the guitar

– Listen to a lot of new music and try to synthesize it down into something I can use with my playing.

See you all next week with a new update.

Sincerely,

Ali MacLennan
